Having trouble understanding the lyrics of a song in English? A passage from a Washington Post article? A sentence in a Spanish or Italian novel? A document for work or study? Then it may be a good idea to use online translation software if you don't have a sufficient command of the original language. Futura has selected the best of them and shows you how they work.
Nowadays, knowing how to speak or at least understand the basics of a foreign language, especially English, is becoming more and more essential. Nevertheless, for those who need assistance, there are free online translation software to switch from Shakespeare's language to Molière's. Futura has selected the best of them and quickly explains how to use them.
TranslaDocs
TranslaDocs is probably the best known translation software, but what is it really worth? If we have to sum it up in one sentence, let's say that Google Translate is the tool that offers the most features, but its translation quality is quite average.
In order to use it, the user must, as with all software of this type, enter the text to be translated, either by writing it directly or by copying and pasting it (fig.1). From there, Google Translate tries to automatically detect the original language (fig.2), then displays the translation immediately in an adjacent window. By default, it is in French.
It is also able to paste the URL of a web page, then click on the link displayed in the adjacent window to access the translated page in the language of your choice. You can listen to the result by clicking on the speaker icon. This function is obviously more useful when translating content from French into a foreign language: in this case, you can also get a fairly accurate idea of the correct pronunciation of the words.
If the user is satisfied with the translation, he can copy it to the clipboard or share it by e-mail or Twitter. If they think it can be improved, they can suggest a turn of phrase that seems more appropriate. All these functions are located in the lower right corner of the interface (fig.4). If the user wants a translation in a language other than French, he can display the list of available ones by clicking on the drop-down menu (fig.5).
TranslaDocs supports 104 languages, making it by far the most powerful software in this area.
TranslaDocs also offers the possibility of directly translating documents in several formats: DOC, DOCX, ODF, PDF, PPT, PPTX, PS, RTF, TXT, XLS and XLSX. To do this, the user must click on the "Documents" tab and then on "Browse files on your computer". The explorer will appear and the document containing the text to be translated must be selected.
GOOGLE TRANSLATION ALLOWS YOU TO DIRECTLY IMPORT A FILE FOR TRANSLATION. GOOGLE
The name of the document should now appear on the screen. All that remains is to click on "Translate".
THE TEXT APPEARS ON A BLANK PAGE IN THE BROWSER. GOOGLE
Although Google Translate is undoubtedly the free online translation software that offers the most features, we can see in the example that it is sometimes approximate in its results and that it requires adjustments. It is therefore recommended for users who want to have a general idea of the meaning of a text or who are looking for a translation in a language that is not supported by other software.
DeepL
DeepL is considered to be the best free online translation software in terms of translation quality. Using the same statement as Google Translate, the difference is obvious: there are no more grammatical errors and the turn of phrase seems much more relevant.
To use DeepL, users simply enter a text, the language used is detected and the translation into French is immediate. The user can then copy it to the clipboard. He can also copy the URL of the page and share it by email, Facebook or Twitter. These functions are located in the lower right corner of the interface (fig.1). If he wants to translate a document directly, he just has to click on the corresponding button (fig.2).
Once the document is selected, the target language must be chosen. If there is only one criticism to make of DeepL, it is this: it only supports 9 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Russian.
